Luck is what you make of it
People struck lottery.
We hear that all the time, stories of people getting rich, getting lucky breaks, having things going great for them.
I used to think, why do the good things always go to other people? And when I have something good going on, something unexpected will happen to take it away, or disaster will strike because I have a short wave of happiness.
My thinking changed after I joined a leadership course. There was a particular challenge called “Project Make Your Own Luck”. It completely smashed all my limiting beliefs on getting lucky in life.
Luck can be created.
Create your own luck
First let’s get this straight.
Luck isn’t a magical force waiting to be splashed on the fortunate few, depending on who walks past that fountain of fortune. Maybe there are some who got lucky that way, but there are a vast number of people out there, making their own luck, building their destiny, brick by brick, choice by choice.
Think about the people you admire, maybe the top-tier entrepreneurs, artists, or athletes, did they just stumble into success?
No.
Instead, they made their own luck by combining preparation, action, and persistence to turn possibilities into reality.
Stop waiting for a stroke of luck, let this be a wake-up call. Let’s redefine luck and give you actionable strategies to attract success.
Luck is a skill
Luck isn’t just chance, see it as a formula instead. It happens where preparation meets opportunity. Think of it as a skill you can master rather than a lottery you hope to win.
Here’s the mindset shift:
Old belief: “I hope I get lucky.”
New belief: “I create my own opportunities.”
Take Thomas Edison’s famous words.
“Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.”
Luck favours the ready and the bold.

Proven strategies to make your own luck
1️⃣ Cultivate a growth mindset
Luck starts in your mind. A growth mindset sees every challenge as an opportunity to learn and grow. Instead of focusing on what’s missing, you focus on possibilities.
Life throws a lot of challenges at us. When something doesn’t go your way, ask yourself: What can I learn from this? The older we get, the more troubles we had faced and overcome along the way.
👉 Action step
Dedicate 5 minutes each day to journal about a setback and reframe it as a stepping stone. Think back to a time when your projects fell flat, or you said something that impacted a relationship negatively, or when you felt really bad during Covid.
2️⃣ Build a network of opportunity
Opportunities often come from people, not places. Your network is your net worth. Surround yourself with those who push you forward and open doors you never knew existed.
Stop asking, “What can I get?” and start asking, “How can I help?”
Connections are built mutuallly, a sincere line extended from your side and a similar line from the other side.
👉 Action step
Connect with one new person who inspires you and offer them value without expecting anything in return. Don’t make it transactional, people see through these fast.
3️⃣ Be prepared and stay ready
Luck is the intersection of opportunity and action, it’s being ready when things come knocking. If you’re not honing your skills, someone else is. Don’t be afraid to do the daily grind.
Boring is good. It’s the reps that build the muscles few months down the road. Transformation will not take place overnight. Treat every day as practice for your big break.
👉 Action step
Commit time every day to improve a skill that aligns with your goals.
For me, the top priority to improve writing skills is writing. Even though I know supplementary activities like reading, learning and taking courses also build up writing skills, I take writing practice as my frontload.
4️⃣ Take calculated risks
Staying safe is the enemy of progress. Luck loves risk-takers who step out of their comfort zones.
Stepping into the unknown is where growth and opportunity thrive. When you take a risk, you signal to the world, and to yourself, that you're ready for something bigger. It’s in those moments of uncertainty and discomfort that you
stretch your limits
learn new skills
encounter unimagined possibilities
Playing it safe keeps you stuck in the same place. By embracing calculated risks, you create momentum, invite new opportunities, and position yourself to seize the unexpected rewards that come your way.
👉 Action step
Identify the risks that excite and scare you. Those are the ones worth taking.
Write down the fears that are holding you back from taking those risks.
List the actions that will overcome those fears.
Map out the route to take those actions.
5️⃣ Seize the moment
Opportunities are blocked behind small, inconvenient decisions. Say “yes” more often, even when it feels uncomfortable. Pay attention to what others overlook. The more observant you are, the more you get comfortable with discomfort, the more opportunities come your way.
👉 Action step
Say “yes” to one opportunity that feels like a stretch but excites you.
Power of persistence
Big wins are built on small, consistent actions. Persistence creates momentum, and momentum attracts luck. WIth persistence, you turn small wins into big breaks.
Imagine you’re rolling a snowball. It’s hard to form it at first, it take much effort to make something only as big as your fist. But the further you roll it, the bigger it grows, and it gains weight and speed moving along. That’s the power of persistence.
Every word you wrote is a win. Every like, comment and engagement on your content is a huge win. Document them, celebrate your daily wins, no matter how small. They’ll fuel your motivation.
Keep gratitude in your heart
Gratitude is your magnet for attracting luck and success. When you focus on what you have rather than what you lack, you shift your energy from scarcity to abundance, opening your mind to possibilities and opportunities.
Gratitude allows you to see blessings in every challenge, lessons in every failure, and potential in every situation. It rewires your perspective, helping you approach life with optimism and hope, which naturally attracts success.
Start every day with a gratitude ritual. It could be a short reflection, some positive affirmations, or gratitude journaling. By appreciating the good in your life, you create a powerful magnetic force that draws more of it your way, paving the path for luck and prosperity to flow effortlessly into your journey.
Pitfalls to avoid
Passive waiting: Stop waiting for the “perfect time.” It doesn’t exist.
Over-preparation: Planning is important, but action is essential. Don’t let perfectionism paralyze you.
Ignoring small opportunities: Big breaks often start small. Don’t dismiss the little things.
Your luck is in your hands
Luck isn’t found, it’s made.
Luck is a mindset, a habit, and a series of small choices that lead to big transformations.
Stop waiting for the universe to align. Start aligning your actions with your goals.
The life you want isn’t about chance, it’s about choice.

Thanks for reading.
You rocked it Moon, just coming from Mark's post, found some similarities with your one. Hope I could repost both of your posts together. Your post really inspired me to create my my own luck. I still it something within your "occasional" control, that's so hardwired in me.
Having now read your post I think we came at it from slightly different angles but it's clear to see we could have been sat at the same table glancing at each others work as we wrote.
The key concepts of making your own luck are all in both our pieces. It's obvious that neither of us are sat waiting for some magical genie or leprechaun to grant our wishes or give us access to luck.
I've enjoyed this collaborative experiment and it has almost felt like being back at school with an exciting homework assignment to write and reading each others essays before handing them in.
If that were the case, you'd get an A 🤣
Thanks for suggesting we do this, I feel "lucky" that we connected a few months ago.
