The Kaleidoscope Project is the writing brainchild of
and me, where we take turns providing a fresh writing prompt. At the end of each month, we feature a roundup post highlighting submissions from participating writers. In previous months we had a blast of fun with many Substack writers participating in the challenge:
January – The Tipping Point + Roundup
February – Taking Action + Roundup
March – Permission + Roundup
Now, it’s time for the April challenge!
Prompt: Intent
What drives your writing—instinct or intention?
Some writers let words spill onto the page, hoping to find meaning in the mess. Others write with razor-sharp clarity, knowing exactly what they want to say.
But what if you could bring both freedom and focus into your writing?
This month’s challenge is about writing with intent, not just filling pages, but shaping your words with purpose. It’s the difference between a wandering thought and a compelling story.
Think about:
a novel that grips you from page one? The author had a clear vision.
a speech that moves an audience to action? It was crafted with purpose.
a social media post that catches your eye? It was written with intention.
Without intent, words lose their weight. They float, unfocused. But with intent, your writing gains clarity, impact, and direction. So, what’s your intent when you write?
Explore intent in your writing
For this challenge, we invite you to reflect on the role intent plays in your writing. Use the following prompts to guide you:
1️⃣ What drives you to write?
Do you write to express, to teach, to persuade, or to heal?
What emotions or ideas do you want to convey?
2️⃣ Who are you writing for?
Are you writing for yourself, for a specific audience, or for the world?
How does your intent shape the way you communicate?
3️⃣ What message do you want to leave behind?
If someone reads your work, what should they walk away with?
Are you aiming to inspire, challenge, or entertain?
4️⃣ How does intent shape your tone, structure, and style?
A strong intent can sharpen your voice and make your writing more engaging.
Try repurposing a past piece of writing and injecting more intent into it. Do you notice the difference?
How to join?
Create something that fits the theme of “Intent“. Push yourself beyond just writing, consider creating:
A poem, haiku, short story, or song
A drawing or visual representation of intent
Something completely outside the box!

Write with intent.
Make an impact.
Create something unforgettable.
I've already written and scheduled most of my posts for April already (Go me!) but I left room for April's Challenge posts. What's interesting though is I have one fully complete that exactly fits and all I will have to do is add a few challenge references.
It feels like cheating, or maybe being clairvoyant 🤣
Great post Moon, I'll have to get my thinking cap on for another just so I have to write a post with the "intention" of completing the challenge!
This is a big subject. I had a few experiences recently based on intention, and I was about to share them in a post.
I definitely want to take part.
