How I Overcome Acrophobia (Fear of Heights)
(Dare to fail at overcoming your fear of heights? Try this simple strategy)
I used to live in a 2-storey house.
I moved when I was 20.
For reasons unknown, my fear of heights was triggered.
The 8th storey is scary (sorry I’m such a chicken).
If you’re anything like me, you’d be:
- One arms-length away from any out-facing walls
- Admiring views from behind bars (my grilled window)
- Walking in a straight line on the middle of a bridge
Simple Strategy To overcome Fear of Heights
I decided to try out what google suggests: face your fear head-on.
So I went on a cable car ride.
It’s 4 persons to a cabin.
1st time: I shut my eyes
2nd time: Shut my eyes, take deep breaths
3rd time: Shut my eyes, take deep breaths, (silent) pep talk
4th time: Shut my eyes, take deep breaths, (silent) pep talk, prepare to open eyes
5th time: Shut my eyes, take deep breaths, (silent) pep talk, open eyes,
6th time: Open my eyes, shut them again
7th time: Pep talk: I’m safe
8th time: Eyes open, heads up
9th time: Look down
The beautiful scenery blew me away
No more 10th time.
Did I cure my Acrophobia?
No.
I only overcome it.
I still keep away from walls.
I still like to admire views from behind bars
I still walk in the middle of the bridge.
But I know, anytime I want to go up to high places, I can go (with shaky legs).
And the point is, fear won’t stop me.
It’s not heights that I overcome.
It’s my own fear.
